Malmesbury travelled to Nailsworth Mills expecting an 'interesting' evening of bowls. Whilst the Malmesbury players can say the green was 'interesting' and 'heavy', the locals assured us that the green was playing well and it was 'fast' compared to previous weeks. All three rinks struggled to cope with the green and missed playing at home on the truer, more consistent artificial surface, where drawing is the name of the game, not playing with weight all the time to get close to the kitty. Malmesbury managed OK with short length jacks but struggled on the longer length jacks, but overall were outplayed by the hosts.

The match was played in a good atmosphere with convivial hosts. Next year, Malmesbury will have to make the most of home advantage and learn to get to grips with the away greens as quick as possible. It doesn't matter what the green is like, you have to play with what is in front of you.

It was good to see Bernard Crabb as our only spectator alongside Roy Wilcox, our selector.

The scores on the doors were

  • Ruby 12-17
  • Tim 13-21
  • John 12-21

Overall Malmesbury lost 0-10 on points and 37-59 on shots. Thankfully, Malmesbury was already assured of promotion before the game. Next week, the team has a bye so the season finished on a low note on Tuesday 3 August 2021.
