Market Bosworth Bowling Club
Despite the terrible weather during the Saturday of the Scarecrow Trail weekend a good number of visitors came along and enjoyed our Peter Pan entry and when at times were marooned in the clubhouse, our cream teas. The Sunday proved a different kettle of fish weather wise and visitors came out in huge numbers to enjoy the whole Trail and our club in particular. Many young and old tried the game of bowls and ate us out of the cream teas! Chris Massie and Edith Cairns did a magnificent job in the baking and jam making departments.
The scarecrow entry itself received rave reviews, quite rightly so. Tricia Tams again was the inspiration of all the figures, knitting furiously for several weeks to produce life-size ‘crows’ in the form of Peter Pan and Captain Hook, along with a parrot, crocodile, seagull, lobsters and crabs. At the start of the project Tricia asked Derrick Wain if he could build a boat and WOW, Derrick came up with a magnificent Galleon. Derrick spent many many hours in his shed, and as usual nothing was too much trouble. He made cannons, an anchor, treasure chest, steering wheel, mast and galley doors, absolutely brilliant. With so much rain we should have renamed it The Ark not the The Jolly Roger.
All in all, a superb effort with £150 being donated to St. Peters School and several people signing up to join the bowls club.
Next up is Bosworth in Bloom so we will keep trying to keep the club looking spick and span.
Our club coach Richard Newby is holding Saturday Morning ‘Come and have a go’ / training sessions during July and August between 10 and 12 o’clock. EVERYONE MOST WELCOME.
The main reason for our club is of course the bowling and our green is looking very, very good and ‘bowling’ well. Mick Jones our green keeper is doing a magnificent job ably assisted by his Monday morning gang.
It is with great regret to report the passing of one of our longest and most respected members. Mick Pointon was a member of the club for over 21 years having joined with other members of the local ‘farming’ community who met after the weekly livestock market. He was an original member of the Thursday night league team who traditionally went out for a meal after the game, and Micks’ choice was always Lasagne, an expert on the dish!
A genuine Gentleman. Sadly missed.
