Talbot Cup 2023

The Talbot Cup has a rich history dating back to 1895 which was the year that Dr William Penny Brookes, founder of the Wenlock Olympian Society, died. The then owner of the Talbot Inn was so inspired by Penny Brookes life work that he donated an elaborate silver cup to be played for by the bowlers of Much Wenlock.

The Cup is now worth a pretty penny and rarely leaves the town museum so on Sunday 6th August the bowlers of Much Wenlock once again competed for the trophy but had to make do with using a replica. This did not deter the competitors who fought tooth and nail over 5 hours of play to arrive at this years winner. It was a beautifully sunny afternoon enjoyed by bowlers and spectators alike.

The semi-finals were a very close run thing with just a few shots in it. Tony Partridge was edged out by Tony Swales and Mervyn Jarman's game against Peter Yates was tied at 20-20 after 30 ends before Yates' final bowl made the difference.

The winner this year, after 12 years of trying, was Club Chairman Tony Swales who defeated Peter Yates in the final.
