Activities
To give you some idea of the sort of things we get up to, here are some of the things we do or have done in the recent past. Many of our events are paid for completely or in part out of club funds with a lot of our bar night events involving a buffet where those attending just bring something to share.
Eating out
We do a lot of this! We have some monthly regulars, eg Meal of the Month, Ladies Lunch and Let's Do Lunch, as well as other in-between foodie nights out. The venue can be anything from a local pub to a nice restaurant or bistro but we always try to make sure there are options to satisfy everyone.
Strawberries & Fizz night
A favourite around Wimbledon time.
Burns night
We used to celebrate this every year, complete with haggis and a piper but now we just have a nice evening with some music by Scottish artists.
Cheese & Wine
Any time!
Pizza Night
A couple of yummy slices followed by a quiz
Fish & Chip Night
To celebrate St George's day
Discos
Have a bop to a disco, a singer or band. We enjoy these often.
Ceilidh
We have a good one to celebrate St Patrick's day with plenty of dancing and a singalong
Golf driving range & Crazy golf
Take out some of your frustrations on the balls then have a great laugh on a brilliant crazy golf course, followed by hot chocolate and cake in the café.
Walking
We have a dedicated group of walkers who walk every weekend and sometimes mid-week too. Often they end up meeting for a meal in a pub afterwards. In the summer there are also shorter walks for those of us with a bit less stamina, usually ending up in a café or pub.
Boating
Row boats on the River Esk at Ruswarp followed by lunch at a local garden centre then off to Whitby for a wander round before finishing up with fish & chips - a good day out
Tall Ships
When they visited this area - beautiful ships to look at and go on board
The Races
Dress up for Ripon Ladies Day.
Daffodil Walk
A nice stroll along the river at Farndale followed by lunch at the pub
Theatre
Lots of trips with a great variety – musical, comedy, thriller – both indoor and outdoor.
Day trips
We have trips at the weekend, and sometimes organise days out during the week. Examples of recent trips: Whitby for Goth weekends (plus fish ‘n chips) or to see around Captain Cooke’s Endevour when it called in; Durham to see the Lindisfarne gospels; Beamish Museum; War weekend at Pickering, Himalayan Gardens.
BBQs
Good fun in the summer if the weather cooperates, eg on Redcar beach or member’s houses.
Xmas Celebrations
Always a good excuse to celebrate: We have a Xmas dinner dance at a local hotel as well as on our regular bar nights in December we have a Xmas party, a mulled wine & mince pies night and a Xmas cake, wine and cheese night.
Bottle & Plate
These are parties at member’s houses where you take some food to share and your own booze. Sometimes these are fancy dress or have a theme and raise money for charity.
Weekends away
eg lots of choice, eg Scarborough, Llandudno in Wales, the Lakes.
Cinema
With the option of meeting for food before.
Quizes
We do these now and then on bar nights, sometimes associated with something else, eg pizza night.
Music
Wide range – choral, folk, pop, rock.
Speakers
Interesting topics.
Big Day Out
An annual bus day trip, eg Keswick, Beamish, Alnwick Castle, Hull, Castle Howard, Scarborough
Holidays abroad
There are a lot of these with recent trips to Tunisia, Italy, Corfu, Crete, Turkey, Morocco, Fuengirola, Thailand, South Africa, etc.
We are always open to suggestions from the members.
