Club Finals began this morning in bright sunshine with the green looking immaculate having been cut earlier by Trevor Wearn with help from Keith Turnbull. The free running green led to some excellent bowling. In the Open Singles, Terry Heath opened up an early 9-0 lead against Sean Lassman but the latter, playing in his first Open Final, dug in and when he came back to trail just 18-16 it looked as if the 3 times former winner might falter. Terry, however, held firm and scoring a three won 21 -16. The Men's Singles followed a similar pattern with Ashley Nethercliffe opening up a 9-1 lead over Dave Harrison, who was featuring in his first Men's Final. Dave too hung in and closed to 9-14 before Ashley again took control and, at the age of 18, lifted his third successive Men's title. The Two Wood Singles saw another player participating in the final for the first time as Keith Turnbull took on last year's runner up Ric Newson. Try as he did Keith found Ric in fine form and the latter won comfortably 18-6 to lift the title for the 2nd time. The two Acorn (Novice) Singles were both initially close contests with Marion Bringes leading Shirley Goodwin 7-6 after 9 ends and Jim Dixon leading Ruchard Startin 10-9 after 13 ends. In both cases, however, one player then took control with Marion winning 21-7 and Richard winning 21-13. Two other finals were scheduled for today but three of our members were representing Hampshire in the Amy Rose event at Leamington so the Women's Singles between Heather Statham and Camilla Kingshott will be played tomorrow evening with the Pairs featuring Nicole Rogers and Ashley Nethercliffe against Janie Vickers and Sean Lassman being in the morning of Sunday 10th September
