This afternoon Ric Newson took on Elliott Guthrie of Nottinghamshire in the National Singles at Royal Leamington Spa.  By the time play began, early morning rain had ceased but things nonetheless looked black as Ric's opponent, who had been to the Nationals on previous occasions, picked up a first end three.  To his credit, Ric, on his first appearance at the Championships, did not allow this set back to worry him and he levelled the scores at 8-8 and then playing some excellent bowls set up a 16-10 lead.  Ric's supporters were growing increasingly confident but Elliott, by now had found line and length on one side of the green and sadly Ric persevered with the opposite side on which he had earlier had success. The result was that Elliot was able to take control of the game and, despite Ric's best efforts, Eliott eventually emerged triumphant by 21-16.   Ric certainly did not let himself down in this game but reflecting afterwards he expressed disappointment for those many club members who had travelled to Leamington to support him and those who had sent him their best wishes.  His disappointment at the result was understandable but he can be proud of his performance and he certainly never let anyone down.  It is an achievement to reach Leamington- few do it.
