After lifting two Basingstoke and District titles in the previous two days, Ric Newson took on Old Basing's Graham Hillier in the Final of the Whitchurch and District Singles. Ric was not at the races initially bowling a wrong bias and even picking up the mat when Graham still had a bowl to deliver. It was no surprise therefore that he was soon .3-9 down. Things got worse and, at 8-18, a win for Graham looked a certainty but Ric came back to 16-19 and a fine conversion shot saw him level at 19-19. Holding a winning lie on the next end it looked for a moment as if Ric had turned round the game but, with the last bowl of the end, Graham drew shot to save the match. On what turned out to be the final end Graham nailed the jack with his first bowl and Ric was unable to move it so had to settle for being the runner up.
