This evening the Oakley "Oldies" travelled to Alton to take on Alton Social in the Tony Allcock Trophy - the National mixed double rink trophy for players aged 60 and over. The Oakley rink skipped by Spencer Kerley dropped an early 4 and at 5 ends Oakley trailled overall by 5-11. Both rinks, however, kept their nerve and by 10 ends the deficit had been reduced to just 4 shots. The match remained tight but by 15 ends Alton had moved out to a 6 shot lead. Oakley came again over the next few ends and when Spencer Kerley's rink edged ahead at 18 ends hopes were raised that we might sneak an overall win. Sadly on the next end poor shot selection saw Oakley drop a 4 and so Spencer's rink finished 1 down. At this stage Fred Norris's rink had one end to play and being all square on that game Oakley needed 2 shots on the last end to win. After 8 bowls had been delivered Oakley held the necessary 3 shots but Gary Johnson managed to get the shot for Alton and Fred's final attempt to change the situation went wrong as he hit a short bowl. Social, therefore, triumphed by 36 shots to 34. Oakley scores: Janie Vickers, Jim Dixon, Kay Kerley and Fred Norris lost 17-18, Christine Williams, Sue Dixon, Ric Newson and Spencer Kerley lost 17-18
