THEY THINK IT'S ALL OVER - IT IS NOW
Oakley Bowling Club
This weekend saw the Club saying a sad good bye to the 2017 season. On Saturday there was a disappointing turn out for the closing Spoon Drive but those who did attend enjoyed a sunny afternoon with President Jim Fitzgerald picking up the Men's spoon and Angie Rowe the Women's. A contributory factor to the low turn-out was that the Spoon Drive clashed with the Whitchurch League Presentation game where, because of our successes in their Leagues and Competitions, we had to provide 12 players at a time when many individuals were on holiday. Holiday absentees included the Captain of the Division 1 winners, Oakley Buzzards, but at least that meant the Trophy could be picked up by a younger and better looking player in Ashley Nethercliffe.
Sunday morning saw work begin on putting the green to bed for the winter and, by 8 am, four members of the Greens team were hard at work hollow tining the green. Around 10 am, three more members arrived to remove the mats from the ditches and it was quite an experience for super sub Sean, who thought he was there just to remove mats but ended up helping with the heavy work on the green. He enjoyed it so much he is rumoured to be thinking of taking a day off work so he can help again on Monday. Much work remains to be done over the next couple of days but, weather permitting and assuming all those who have volunteered to help arrive, our Greeens Co-ordinator Trevor is confident that by Wednesday all essential work will have been completed.
