Overton Rugby Club
The Senior teams espouse the club mantra – ‘grass roots rugby at its best’ – to the full. The Seconds play for enjoyment, believing that if the players are having fun then the results will follow – and this has worked so far. The First team are more competitive and play to win, but have fun at the same time. A slight twist on the Seconds’ philosophy, but one that serves the team well. The club has a 5-year plan which places the first team as a mid-table Hampshire 1 club - the “senior junior” club in North Hampshire. We have the facilities to support this ambition and we have most of the players. We are, however, always on the lookout for players of all abilities, to further strengthen and support our senior squads.
Come to Laverstoke Park on a Tuesday or Saturday and experience competitive/friendly rugby, in a fun and family-friendly atmosphere, at what is surely Hampshire’s most attractive and stunning rugby ground, set in the picturesque North Hampshire countryside. Despite our rural location we are within 15 minutes’ drive of the conurbations of Andover, Newbury. Winchester and Basingstoke, making us your perfect escape to the countryside.
We look forward to welcoming you to Laverstoke Park.
The First team currently play in Hampshire 2, finishing just outside the promotion spots in 2010, 2011 and 2012. This is a young squad that is coming of age, and will serve the club well for the next few years. Testament to this is the fact that two players represented the club in the Club Hampshire senior side last season, competing well with players who represent clubs up to level 5, (Overton are currently at level 10).
Ryan Cornell (current First team Captain) and Ben Bull deserve all the plaudits that have been levelled against them from Club Hampshire. In addition Alex Plows competed well at under 21 level. The first team operate from a squad of 25 players, fielding 18 each week, making full use of the league’s new laws allowing rolling substitutions.
The Second team gained promotion last season (2011/12) to Hampshire Merit 2, and are competing well at this higher level. Currently lying mid-table, they are looking to consolidate this position and remain in this league. The Seconds have players ranging in age from 17 to 54, with a number of the younger players on the edge of a regular First team spot. The Seconds, more commonly known as Bondy’s ‘Inglorious Bustards’, draw from a pool of in excess of 50 players, all hidden away in Bondy’s “little black book”.
Training takes place every Tuesday at Laverstoke Park starting at 19.00. There is the occasional squad run through on Thursdays, starting at the same time, dependent on weekend fixtures. The Senior selection committee sits every Tuesday to select the weekend’s squads. The committee comprises the team Captains, Managers and Coaches – with the Chairman having the casting vote, in cases of dispute.
Current annual subscription is £60.00 for full playing membership, with £5.00 match fees each week. We recognise that some occasional players in the Seconds, due to family/work commitments, will not find these figures attractive – and in these instances, where only a few games will be played throughout the season, there is the option to become an ‘Occasional’ player for £10.00, with £10.00 match fees.
