PARKSIDE BOWLS CLUB
A BrIef History
In 1981 John Brown, the WGC League Secretary was also Parkside Bowls Club secretary. He began 'Learner' courses to introduce new players to the sport of lawn green bowls. These courses proved very successful and two teams competed in the WGC League, namely Parkside and Beehive. However the number of members declined and after the 1982 season the Parkside team was dropped.
In 1983 five of the 'Learners' elected to retain the Parkside Club and has competed in the League successfully ever since.
Parkside Bowls Club has approximately 30 members and enters two teams in the Welwyn Hatfield Bowls League.
Our Greenside team currently play in the 1st Division and finished runners up in the 2015 season and also runners up in the John Brown Trophy having held the Trophy in 2013 and 2014.
Our Woodside team play in the 2nd Division and have finished mid table for the last two seasons since joining the League in 2014.
We also have a ladies team in the St Albans and District Ladies Bowls Association and Parkside Bowls Club will be hosting the Ladies Semi-finals at King George V Playing Fields in 2016.
Our home games are played at King George V Playing Fields, off Beehive Lane, Welwyn Garden City, Herts AL7 4BP. Finesse Leisure Partnership on behalf of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, maintain the bowling greens and the club facilities to a very high standard and all the facilities are available for public hire during the season.
Our club roll up (practice) days are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 2 pm, as well as Sundays friendly games permitting.
Friendly games are organised throughout the season when we get to play against and socialse with other local bowls teams.
In late April and during May we organise a free 'Play Bowls Day' and four 'Play Bowls 4 Fun' afternoons as indicated in our Fixtures Section, where everyone is welcome, young and old, experienced bowlers, novices or anyone who would just like to have a go.
We have 2 qualified Bowls Coaches willing to assist or teach anybody how to play bowls during these sessions.
For the 2017 season to incorporate the Parkside name, Greenside has become Parkside Greens and Woodside has become Parkside Woods. Parkside Bowls has also re-entered a men's team into the East Herts League after a few years absence.
