Club Finals and League Update 2017
Parkside Bowls Club
Our September began with a triples day where 6 triples competed for the newly reinstated Triples Trophy. The day was very enjoyable and well organised with Marjorie Lewis, Avril Randall and Brian Clarke running out worthy winners.
The weekend of 15th began with the Welwyn Hatfield Bowls League Pairs Competition. This was played at King George V green due to the number of finals to be played by Alan Croshaw of Parkside and Gary Smith of BSP. The game started at 5 pm and finished under floodlights at 7.30. It was a very hard fought contest with Alan Croshaw and Colin Jones taking the title 22 - 18. Well done to you both, excellent game to watch and very nerve racking.
Saturday then found Alan competing in two single competitions in the Welwyn Hatfield Bowls League. Unfortunately Alan was a gallant runner up on this occasion with one game going to the wire after 30 ends narrowly losing 21 - 20. Better luck next year Alan.
Sunday afternoon saw Parkside hosting our club finals, with four games being hotly contested. All the games were really close and hard fought with only 1 or 2 points the winning difference at the end. Well done to Mick Looney and Laraine Clarke winners of the men's and women's singles respectively, Billy Draycott winner of the two woods and Derek Robertson in his first season the novices champion. All different names on the trophies this year which is really encouraging for the future. Unfortunately the 4321 and pairs finals couldn't be contested this year due to illness and holidays. Therefore the winner of the 4321 is Alan Croshaw and the pairs are Laraine Clarke and John McCrossan.
Our final divisional tables have now been published with the Greens after a tense last couple of games securing their position in Division 1 of the Welwyn Hatfield League and the Woods after a brilliant second half of the season finishing 4th in Division 2. In the East Herts Mens League Parkside finished 3rd, a magnificent achievement in their first season. Also Parkside ladies finished a very respectable 4th in the St Albans Friday League.
All in all we have had one of the best seasons for every team and every individual for a long time. Let's do even better next season. Thank you to all the Captains and their assistants for their hard and often thankless work in achieving our success and not forgetting Marge and Penny for the delicious cakes which kept us going throughout the season.
