Over the weekend of September 11th & 12th, Leigh Park BC hosted the P&D’s Champion of Champions Competition. In a normal year, this would have brought the curtain down on the P&D Season, but this year there are still Midweek Triples titles to be decided.

The P&D CoC is played by the winners of each Affiliated P&D Club’s Men’s Singles Championship. This year saw the smallest contingent of Club Champions appear – 13 in total.

The early rounds were played on Saturday 11th with the Final being played on Sunday 12th.

The standard of bowling on both days was excellent with many matches taking more than 25ends before a winner was found and most were hard fought.

It ended with the Final being contested between the Champions of two Division Three Clubs, which is believed to be the 1st time this has happened during the Tournament’s 53year existence!

In the 1st Round, the match between Vospers’ Sean Taylor and Leigh Park’s Peter Robinson took 31ends before Sean finally won through 21-19. Meanwhile, it took the new Ivan Robb winner, Brian LeMarquerof Waterlooville, 25ends before he finally brought an end to the resistance of Priory’ Steve Watt 21-19. In another, it took 23ends before Pembroke Gardens’ Dave Brookes squeeked through 21-20 against Gosport’s Tony Horne.

The Quarter-Finals had similarly tough games, none more so than that between College Park’s Roy Carter and Brian LeMarquer, which needed 32ends before Roy got through 21-19!!

The 1st Semi was managed to be played on the Saturday and it saw Dave Brookes take on Milton Park’s Andy McKain. After 11ends, Andy was ahead 13-6 and after 6more ends he was 16-12 up. At that point, Dave finally seemed to have got his measure as he won the next 5ends to get through 21-16

It had been hoped to play both Semi’s on the Saturday, but not surprisingly after his lengthy Quarter and 1st matches, Roy wasn’t in a fit enough state to play his, which was then scheduled for Sunday morning.

On a very sunny Sunday, Roy took on Alexandra’s Steve Feilder in their delayed Semi and it was Steve who benefited most in the early stages of the game to race into a 16-4 lead after 10ends, which became 18-9 after another 4ends. At that point Roy woke up and proceeded to win the next 6ends to run out the winner 21-18 after another 20ends of bowls.

The Final saw Roy start of sluggishly again, so that after 8ends, Dave Brookes was up 13-3. It did seem that Roy needed that sort of kick-up-the-pants to get his game into gear as he brought the deficit back to 2shots, 17-15 after 18ends.

However, an excellent 3 on the 19th end took Dave to the hill and 2excellent opening bowls on the next end had Ray having to use weight to disturb them, which he failed to do, meaning Dave became the P&D’s 2021 Champion of Champions – 21-15
