Volunteers

Our business plan states "The project is nominally in the recreational sector but fundamentally addresses community cohesion and inclusivity as well as the development of physical and mental well-being".

It is an activity where we can accommodate large numbers in a relatively small space and where there is the opportunity for all ages to be involved on an equal basis.  Grandparents can learn to skate with their grandchildren.  It's about building self esteem, learning to socialise but mainly about having fun.  These benefits extend to the team as well as the participants.

Shepton Get Ur Skates On is run entirely by volunteers aged from about 12 to 70. It takes about 20 minutes to set up all the disco lights and sound at the start and then another 20 minutes at the end to take it all down.  Then for the two sessions we need about six adults - one on the desk, two issuing boots, two senior marshalls skating around keeping an eye on everything and a team leader.  We have three teams working on a rota.
