In remembrance
Robert Jeffrey Hughes, from Lee Avenue, Shilbottle, was just 18 when he died in an explosion while serving with the 1st Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery in Aden on 28 April 1966. He was killed during fighting with dissident tribesmen in the mountains of the Radfan area of Aden.
The Aden Emergency (1963-67) was an insurgency against British rule in the south of the Arabian Peninsula. The unrest hastened British plans for withdrawal and marked the end of 20 years of decolonisation. (Source National Army Museum)
