Remembrance Sunday 2018

A lasting tribute from Parish and organisations to mark 100 years since the end of World War I.

Over 100 people, including riders and horses from the village Riding School attended the service led by the Rev. Bob Bain.

The blessing was given by Reverend Holland.

Music was by:

  • Lillian Hume, organist;
  • Henry Knox, Northumbrian pipes;
  • Dan Bain, trumpeter.

The day began with a piper arriving at St. James' Church to pipe guests and members of the congregation into Church. The Duke and Duchess of Northumberland attended with the former giving a reading from The New Testament. In attendance also was The Chief Superintendent of Police, The Group Captain from RAF Boulmer, The Lord High Sheriff, The Chair of Northumberland County Council and many family members of those who fell in the defence of their Country.

A parade led by our piper and the band of the Naval Cadets to Green Hut Corner for the dedication and laying of wreaths. The RAF Sea King helicopter hovered overhead for the unveiling ceremony.

Hundreds of villagers joined the parade to The Welfare Field where a tremendous Buffet and Hog Roast as provided by Shilbottle Forum for over 500 villagers.

Stalls, games and music continued throughout the afternoon which culminated in a Football Match between RAF Boulmer and Shilbottle Miners Welfare football team.

The Shilbottle Miners Welfare team beat the RAF Boulmer team 13 - 0. It was a great game and played in the same spirit of the truce  enemy forces called on Christmas Day 1914 when they played football together in No Man's Land.
