Smarden Parish Council

Community and Public Transport

Smarden is isolated with no buses during the evenings or at weekends.  We are near to various railway stations.  We are fortunate to have volunteer and community transport schemes.  You can find details below.

BUSES:  Smarden has a very limited bus service with no buses at weekends. 

The 123 bus travels to and from Ashford from Monday to Friday.  For details see https://www.stagecoachbus.com/routes/south-east/123/biddenden-ashford/xfao123.i

The nearest stations are Pluckley and Headcorn with services to Charing Cross, via London Bridge and Waterloo and to Folkestone, Canterbury and Margate. 

You can catch high speed trains to St Pancras from Ashford International as well as Eurostar services to Paris and Brussels

WEALDEN WHEELS community transport service is  financially supported by the Parish Councils of Smarden, Charing, Challock, Egerton Chilham and Pluckley Wealden Wheels currently runs four minibuses which are available for hire by village families or groups who join the scheme. Managed largely by volunteers and run on a not-for-profit basis, it aims to provide an accessible, affordable and flexible means of transport to village members.  130 or so members include local families, village clubs and societies. Members use the service for social, leisure, educational and health purposes. Trips can be either short or long, local or further afield, subject to vehicle and driver availability. KENT KARRIER DIAL-A-RIDE weekly service from Smarden to Ashford and back.  Kent Karrier is a flexible Dial-a-Ride service that takes members directly from their door to the nearest town centre. All services are operated with wheelchair accessible vehicles and experienced drivers will give them all the help they need.  Group bookings and airport runs etc are also available.To book the service you need to be a Kent Karrier member and quote your membership number.  You can become a member if:

• you have a mobility impairment or other medical condition that makes travelling on public transport difficult. Carers or companions can also travel.

• you live in a rural area more than 500 metres away from a bus stop or railway station.

• you are 85+ (proof of age required).

Smarden Good Neighbour Scheme provides a service to and from:

  • HEADCORN  every Thursday morning at 10.00 a.m. returning around 11.00 a.m.
  • TENTERDEN: one Tuesday and one Thursday morning trip per month at 10.00 a.m leaving Tenterden by noon.
