Smarden Parish Council

Hedges and Ditches

Hedges and ditches: the Parish Council appeals to landowners to cut back hedges where they overhang a road, pavement or footpath.  Also please keep ditches clear to prevent flooding in the winter months.

Nesting birds: the Parish Council is conscious of reports in the media advising of the decline of the British Songbird population. It is thought that the practice of cutting or trimming hedges during the bird nesting season is a contributory factor in their decline. The RSPB rspb.org.uk advises that in order to protect birds and to comply with the legislation surrounding this it is best to avoid cutting the hedge until 1st August or, if it is necessary, for the hedge to be cut after thorough check is made to ensure that nests will not be destroyed or disturbed during the process.
