Smarden Parish Council

Jacob Turner charity

A farm in Pluckley was left in 1686 by Jacob Turner to provide for the poor of Smarden. Turner was a wealthy City merchant trading with Turkey, and whose father had built up a broadcloth export business, shipping out of London and Faversham. Turner’s charity originally distributed corn and locally-made clothing to the old men of the Parish. Nowadays the charity supports older people gifting  vouchers to spend at Smarden Butcher’s/Post office at Christmas  Contact:  Mark Wilson on 770528 or  Kathy Wilson 770144 or will.kath@hotmail.com
