Despite a mid-afternoon downpour, the green was in excellent condition to see the conclusion of the Open League season. Champions in waiting South Cliff took on rivals Scalby & Newby who, if the results went right would be runners-up - 4 clubs were separated by 2 points.

This was an excellent bowls match with some superb performances witnessed across the three rinks. After six ends South Cliff led on one rink and were down by a shot on two. The next six ends saw the home team become dominant in two rinks and drawing on the third, the aggregate at this stage was in South Cliff’s favour by 42 to 28. The final six ends saw South Cliff maintain their advantage running out winners on two rinks by 21-18 and 23-12. The third rink recorded a narrow defeat 13-15. In terms of points the two rinks and aggregate score of 57-45 gave the Champions a 6-2 victory.

So after 14 matches which saw South Cliff finishing the season with 84 points and a shots difference of +142. They recorded an average of 6 points per match!

The team, having played 14 matches, delivered the following stats:

Played 14
Won: 9
Drew: 4
Lost : 1

Impressively 6 of the matches resulted in a maximum 8-0 victory

We are delighted with the successes of the season - a season we all feared would not take place. Several regulars in the team have come through the social bowling ranks having been recruited to the club in the dark days when we faced closure due to falling numbers.

As to when the Club last won the Open League - the most senior members with over 25 years service have no recollection to the Club ever winning this league.

We now have the the Aussie Pairs to anticipate - the South Cliff S side reside at the top with a fixture remaining and the Vets face a cup semi-final battle with Scalby on August 10th.

Many thanks to the league organisers, club captains, players and the green team at South Cliff.
