Today, South Cliff Bowling Club held their Independent League Fives competition - generously sponsored by Falsgrave Funeral Service. A pair and a triples team from 10 clubs were to battle it out over 8 matches. Unfortunately, one team did not turn up leaving the organisers with some quick thinking to do before the teams took to the green.

In weather conditions that ranged from windy, with some drizzle to an afternoon of glorious sunshine, the teams battled away. At the halfway stage one point separated the top four teams of Driffield A, Sledmere, Filey and Hutton Cranswick. With two to play one point separated the top three of Hutton Cranswick, Filey and Stamford Bridge.

The final event - pairs - saw Stamford Bridge take on Scalby and Filey play Hutton Cranswick, on adjacent rinks. The matches were excellent and the outcome in the balance until the final woods. Bonus points and shots difference were looming large in the calculations. The Stamford Bridge v Scalby match was tied, whereas Filey beat Hutton Cranswick.

So it was back to clubhouse to compute the final totals, taking into account bonus points scored and shots difference. After nearly 8 hours of action, Stamford Bridge and Filey were tied on points with 21 but Stamford Bridge won the event by dint of a better points difference of 26 to 22

League secretary, Les Watts thanked all the competitors for an excellent day’s bowling and Jan & Edwin for organising the event and also everyone who helped on the day - setting up the green, in the kitchen, running the raffle, the scoring and tidying up.
