"The re-arranged match against Southampton Sport Centre Ladies took place on Wednesday 13th September and resulted in a well fought victory for our ladies.  It was the final match of the season.

Nola Bayley, Pam Crompton and Barbara Sparling started poorly being 0-9 down at four ends, but a slight resurgence including a welcome 5 on the 6th end brought them back into the game.  Scores of 3 were traded on the 7th & 8th ends followed by a single for the home side which put the score at 10-12.  On the 10th end skip Sparling managed to draw through a tight gap in the opposition-held head to pick up the jack to take it to a home shot behind, thus avoiding a handful of shots against and the team achieved parity.  After that they pulled ahead slightly but disappointment could have struck again when a nicely drawn threesome by Crompton (including two touchers)  was overturned by the opposition skip who produced her own toucher .... which was in the ditch along with the jack, lying about a metre apart.  Oh! the bonus of touchers.  With her last wood Sparling was able to promote both of Crompton’s chalked woods into the ditch between the jack and opposing toucher whilst her own wood remained in the count, on the green.  Picking up a three at this point not only raised the team’s spirits but it put their noses in front and the following end they achieved a five which put them well on the way to victory.   Each of the following three ends added two shots to the home tally but the opposition weren’t quite down and out yet, pulling back a five and a two on the final two ends.  The score being 26-20.

On the adjacent rink Jan Body, Lin Mills and Jan Bunker started well and were 6-2 up at six ends.  However the opposition were keen and competitive and a see-saw match developed.  The decisive end was the 15th when our ladies dropped a four, although it could have been more but for Bunker’s last wood.  Going 10-13 down at that stage of the game is never easy, but the team fought back being just one shot down going into the last end.  A score of two on that final end gave them a slender win and the match was won overall 40 shots to 33 and the full 4 points.  This consolidates the ladies in third place in the table at end of the season.   "
