This year's outdoor season is starting to take shape, with the league up and running and the county competitions started, so we’re taking this opportunity to take at look at how the Southampton Old Bowling Green has been performing so far…

Combination Triples

The Combination Triples team started off with a tricky trip to Old Netley, where unfortunately they were beaten across the board, resulting in a 6-0 loss. This result was attributed to a combination of a tricky green and being the first competitive fixture of the new season. However last night the team showed their true form as they bowled their way to a home victory against Follands, lifting the team off the bottom of the table. Fingers crossed that this a sign of things to come!

Combination Fours

The Combination Fours team have had the best start to the season of all the Old Green league teams, recording two out of two wins and both against difficult opponents. The first game of the league campaign saw an unexpected, yet extremely impressive result, as the team white-washed the Fleming Park team at their own green to record points in a 6-0 win. Having won last week against Follands, the team are top of the table and a home win tonight against Romsey would be a perfect start for the team’s push for promotion.

Championship

The Championship side's two league games can be described by one word, ‘nearly’! The team recorded two draws in their opening fixtures against Banister Park and Eastleigh Railway, though both performances were promising, and it’s only a matter of time before the team records their first win of the season. Currently the team are sitting in fifth, but a home win against carpet team Lockswood on Thursday could see the team climbing the table.

National Competitions

As well as the leagues starting, the national competitions are also underway with the team playing the Double Rink against Atherley last Saturday morning and Fleming Park in the Top Club last night. The Double Rink teams played extremely well and ended up within touching distance of a win against the star-studded Atherley team, the final result being the Old Green losing by 4 shots. The Top Club against Fleming Park was equally as tough a fixture, and when both the singles games were lost by 1 shot it appeared an unsurmountable feat, but the Old Green players dug deep and produced convincing wins in the pairs, triples and rinks, resulting in a 3-2 win for the Old Green. The over 65 Mixed Double Rink, also known as the Tony Alcock Trophy, also recorded a 39-35 win over Romsey, putting them through to the next round against Littleton.

All in all, the results from the start of the season are extremely positive and suggests a successful season is underway. Congratulations to all players involved in competitive matches for the club so far, keep up the good work!
