A residents’ survey for the 2016 Speldhurst Parish Plan told us that the state of our roads - together with the poor behaviour of drivers using them - was a major concern for people living in Ashurst, Langton Green, Old Groombridge and Speldhurst. In response, Speldhurst Parish Council and its Highways Committee have been working hard to improve roads and pavements throughout the parish.

What have we been doing?

  • We have been busy collating and submitting details of potholes to KCC Highways team, who are responsible for road maintenance in the parish.
  • We have planned and funded gateways to each of our villages. Marking the entrance to a built-up area has been shown to positively influence driver behaviour and deter certain crime types, due to a sense of communities caring about their neighbourhood.
  • We have funded legislation and signage introducing a 20mph speed limit in Speldhurst, in response to residents’ calls for action against speeding traffic in the village.
  • We have funded and introduced a 20mph speed advisory area in Langton Green.
  • We will continue to work with Kent Highways and Kent Police, aiming to secure speed enforcement in vulnerable areas. We have met with both to seek their help.
  • We are asking for expert advice to see what improvements can be made to the roads you have told us are a concern, due to the speed of vehicles using them or poor layout leading to accidents.

What do we need from you?

  • We would like you to tell us about any accidents you see or become aware of in the parish. We don’t yet have a complete picture of all collisions that occur, and data stored at County level excludes most of the accidents we do know about. Simply send a quick email to clerk@speldhurstparishcouncil.gov.uk, detailing where/what/when, including a picture if you can – but don’t put yourself at risk to get it.
  • Speedwatch is a vital community-based project that offers a visible deterrence and educates on speeding in our villages. We would love it if you could help. To find out more, please contact Chris May, Clerk, on 01892 862927.

The Highways Committee is made up of Parish Councillors and local residents who give up their time to support you. We hope to bring you more Highways news soon.
