Swaffham Beat Retreat

The Royal British Legion, Swaffham Branch alongside Swaffham Town Council were privileged to organise together a Beat Retreat event to commemorate 100 years since the end of WW1.

The event involved an outstanding display by the band of the Grenadier Guards, hot off their recent performance at the Queens Trooping of the Colour.

The evening started with the traditional salute being taken by Major General Sir William Cubitt KCVO CBE, Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Norfolk followed by the Band of the Grenadier Guards parading in the Market Place, displaying excellent musical timing and marching precision.

This was the first visit for the Grenadier Guards to Swaffham and they have said how appreciated and welcomed they felt, expressing a wish to come back again in the future.

The evening concluded with a rousing concert in the Church of St Peter & St Paul, featuring music and singing from the war years, modern musical theatre, big band swing and closing with the music of the last night of the proms.

It was a warm sunny evening and the people of Swaffham turned out in their multitudes to watch, remember and celebrate the occasion.

On behalf of the Royal British Legion, Swaffham Branch and Swaffham Town Council we would like to thank all our wonderful volunteers who helped organise and support the delivery of the event, not to mention the huge clean up exercise.

Your support really helped make this a wonderful event to mark such an incredible occasion.

Volunteering and community involvement is what Swaffham is good at
