Broad Haven

Broad Haven is a charming seaside village nestled on the western coast of Pembrokeshire, Wales, overlooking the expansive St Brides Bay. It’s best known for its Blue Flag beach, a wide stretch of golden sand that draws families, surfers, and nature lovers alike. The beach is backed by a small but lively village with cafés, pubs, and holiday accommodations, making it a popular destination during the warmer months.

The village is part of the Havens community, which includes nearby Little Haven. It’s also a key stop along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, offering stunning cliffside walks and access to nearby coves and beaches like Nolton Haven and Druidston.

🕰️ A Short History of Broad Haven

Early Days: Before the 1800s, Broad Haven was little more than a scattering of houses. It was overshadowed by Little Haven, which had a thriving fishing industry and served as a small harbour.

Victorian Era Boom: The village gained popularity in the 19th century as a seaside resort. Bathing machines—horse-drawn huts that allowed Victorian women to change and enter the sea discreetly—were introduced, marking the start of Broad Haven’s tourism appeal.

Lifeboat Legacy: A lifeboat station was established in nearby Little Haven in 1882. It was later renamed the Little and Broad Haven Lifeboat Station when it reopened in 1967 with an inshore lifeboat.

The “Welsh Triangle”: In 1977, Broad Haven made headlines for a series of alleged UFO sightings, earning it the nickname the Broad Haven Triangle. Schoolchildren and local residents reported seeing strange crafts and humanoid figures, drawing national attention and even an investigation by the Ministry of Defence.

Geological and Archaeological Riches: The coastline around Broad Haven is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its unique geology and marine habitats. The area also features Bronze Age monuments, Iron Age forts, and medieval churches, adding layers of historical intrigue.

If you're ever in Pembrokeshire, Broad Haven is a place where natural beauty, seaside fun, and a touch of mystery all come together.
