Wellington Bowling Club’s Open Singles Indoor Final attracted a full house of spectators on Sunday morning as club members and supporters came to watch.
The two contestants were new member at the club, Martin Saunders and the experienced Nick Channon. The final was marked by Club Secretary Brian Wombwell.
The first half of the game proved to be a fascinating battle. After seven ends Channon had picked up eleven shots to lead 11 – 1 but in the five ends which followed, Saunders collected ten shots so the two combatants were level on 11 shots apiece.
It was anyone’s game at this point but Nick Channon coped with the pressure better and picked up the all important ten shots to reach the finishing line before Martin Saunders who played extremely well but was runner-up on this occasion 21 – 14.
The two bowlers thanked Brian Wombwell for his very able marking of the game and Martin Saunders congratulated Nick Channon on becoming this year’s Wellington Open Bowls Champion.
The audience applauded an excellent game and congratulated both players on an enjoyable match which had been played to a very high standard.
The Club wished to congratulate Competition Secretary John Cherry for his excellent work in so ably organising the competition.
