The Wellington Bowling Club Open Indoor Singles Competition has been a great success this year. More bowlers than ever before have entered the tournament. Twenty eight people put their names down to participate.

Since the competition got under way twenty six games have been played and as a result two bowlers will meet up in the final next Sunday. In the semi-finals were Ian Thomson v Martin Saunders and Nick Channon v Eddie Dilley.

Martin Saunders has only recently joined the Wellington club so he was particularly pleased to get through to the semi-finals against the experienced Ian Thomson who has been a member of Wellington Bowling Club for several years.

The match proved to be as close as a match could be. After an hour of play the two were level on eight shots apiece and after twenty three ends they were still level, the scores 16 – 16.

With time running out Saunders picked up a two shot lead, 19 – 17 and although Ian Thomson played a brilliant last wood to pick up the jack it only gave him one shot, which was not quite enough so Martin Saunders won the match 19 – 18 to go through into the final.

In the other semi-final the experienced competition bowler Nick Channon came up against Eddie Dilley who has only been with the club for a comparatively short time but is already a very talented and capable bowler.

Channon played very well from the beginning and by the tenth he had a very big lead, 17 – 3 and all looked lost for Dilley….. but he was not going to give up that easily. He fought back hard and by the seventeenth was only four shots behind, 17 – 13.

It was anyone’s game and both bowlers picked up shots in the remaining ends but Channon held on to his lead and won the game by six shots, 23 – 17.

The scene is now set for an intriguing final between Nick Channon and Martin Saunders and no doubt many keen bowling fans will be filling the viewing area at the club next Sunday when the final will be played.
