Walking Group
Withington Walkers, Past and Present
Once upon a time, in the mid-1990’s, a group of friends from Withington and Upton Magna came together to form a walking group. This group would meet every other Saturday morning, in the car park of what is now the Haughmond, to head off for a walk in the Shropshire countryside and, needless to say, finish at a suitable hostelry for refreshment. Members of the group took turns to plan and lead the walks and it was all documented in a series of notebooks for posterity.
Alas, as time passed the group diminished and eventually the walks petered out. The last recorded walk was in November 2011.
Now, some years later, we are attempting to revive the spirit of the original walking group and have reformed. I doubt we will be as meticulous in our records and will certainly not match the quality of the handwriting.
Our walks will be less frequent, on average once a month. There will be a mixture of Friday and Saturday walks, of varying degrees of challenge, to try and provide something for everyone. Mind you, if your walking vernacular includes phrases such as “sherpa” or “base camp” these walks may not be for you!
Though we have a core of 15 walkers signed up, the walks will be open to all from Withington and surrounding villages. Friends, family and guests are all welcome. Dogs as well but we cannot guarantee that all stiles will be dog friendly. Keep an eye on the Withington Village WhatsApp group for further announcements. If you aren’t part of this group, we will be happy to update you via email.
If you would like more information or to join our core group (on its dedicated WhatsApp group) please contact Alan Williams on williamsalan999@gmail.com or 07739 694723.
Should you be interested in coming along, the next three walks will be held on
- Friday 27th March 2026
- Saturday 25th April 2026
- Saturday 30th May 2026
