Eadmer of Canterbury and Contemporary Views of the Norman Conquest
This talk will consider the impact of the Norman Conquest on England as seen through the eyes of Eadmer and his contemporaries.
Eadmer of Canterbury (c.1060–1120s) is one of the foremost historians of the Norman Conquest period. Born to a local family, Eadmer had a varied career at the cathedral priory of Canterbury, journeying three times to Rome, being appointed (and resigning) as bishop of St Andrews, and in the process, writing around 20 original works of history, hagiography, and theology.
Dr. Charlie Rozier is Lecturer in Early Medieval History at the University of Kent. He has written widely on the intellectual culture of Anglo-Norman England, and specifically on how new audiences after 1066 explored and wrote about the English past. He is best known for his work on historical writing at Durham after the Norman conquest, but his work on Eadmer brings to publication several years of work with colleagues on one of medieval Canterbury's best-known authors.
