2020 FINALS

2020 MEN’S AND LADIES CHAMPIONS CROWNED

Last Saturday saw the 2020 finals played at the green. With restricted numbers and social distancing in operation it was a very different occasion to previous Finals Days but was still enjoyed by all present.

The Ladies Singles in the morning produced a real classic final, with Sheila Gentry just prevailing over Kim Francis-Ellis 21-20 in a match that lasted 29 ends and almost 3 hours! Sheila held a commanding lead at 17-11 but Kim fought back and was holding match wood at 20-18 with Sheila having one wood remaining – which produced an end-winning shot! Sheila then won the next two tightly-contested ends to take the match and the trophy. A terrific match between two very fine singles players.

The afternoon’s Men’s Final was a real clash of styles with Roger Williams’s classical approach matched against the aggressive driving style of first-time finalist Gary Howells. The match was all square at 12-12 but then Roger’s vast experience told and he was able to emerge a 21-15 winner. Congratulations to Roger but well done to Gary who in only his second full season clearly has a bright future ahead in the sport.

So this strangest of seasons draws towards a close. The Friday Mixed Pairs Leagues have just two rounds of matches remaining (plus a few rearranged games to be caught up) and a reminder to all that the green will close after the close of play on Saturday 19th September Only just over two weeks remaining to take the opportunity to enjoy some bowling in (hopefully) some nice September sunshine!
