A SOGGY SEPTEMBER
There was rather a lot of precipitation in September, when, despite there being 12 dry days in the month, a total of 206mm (8.1 inches) of rain fell compared to 132 mm (5.2 inches) last year.
The two wettest days came at the end of the month, Thursday 26th, when 66mm (2.6 inches) of rain fell, while on Monday 30th there was 36 mm (1.4 inches).
The monitored river levels for Monday 30th recorded both the beck at Bishop Monkton and the Lower River Ure (which affects the road out of the village towards Roecliffe) as “well within the usual range” and therefore no flooding alerts were deemed necessary. However, as can be seen from the pictures taken on Monday 30th, there was certainly significant flooding in the village, as well as rising beck levels, an indication that any amount of relatively heavy rainfall can immediately cause problems for many villagers.
