National Highways Update

As part of our ongoing commitment to improving safety on the A35 between Honiton and Charmouth, National Highways will be delivering a programme of works that includes:

Installation of new traffic signs
Introduction of average speed cameras
Relocation and replacement of existing signs
Localised resurfacing works
Refreshed road markings

The initial vegetation clearance works on the A35 will be undertaken during the day under two-way traffic lights from 02 November 2026 to 13 November 26.

The main programme of works are scheduled to commence on 16 November 2026, with completion currently planned by the end of March 2027. To undertake the improvements safely and efficiently, overnight road closures will be required at various stages of the programme, Monday to Friday between the hours of 20:00 and 05:00.

The scheme will be delivered in phases, progressing eastwards from Honiton to Charmouth. The first phase of works within the Wilmington area will involve the installation of illuminated signs, average speed camera equipment and associated feeder pillars. These works are currently programmed as follows:

New Road, Wilmington to Worham Lane: 16 November 2026 to 23 November 2026
Monkton Road to New Road, Wilmington: 24 November 2026 to 01 December 2026

The second phase will involve the removal of existing signs and the installation of new signage, including yellow backed warning signs and camera signs, together with the relocation of village signs and some localised resurfacing works. These activities are currently programmed as follows:

Monkton Road to New Road, Wilmington: 11 January 2027 to 18 January 2027
New Road, Wilmington to Worham Lane: 19 January 2027 to 27 January 2027

The final phase of the scheme will consist of road marking improvements and is programmed as follows:

Monkton Road to New Road, Wilmington: 16 February 2027 to 18 February 2027
Wilmington to Worham Lane: 19 February 2027 to 23 February 2027

Correspondence for local residents is currently in the final stages of approval and will be distributed in the coming weeks. This will provide further details on the planned works, including information on traffic management arrangements, closure locations, diversion routes and where residents can access the latest updates throughout the scheme.
