A5 Old Stratford roundabout traffic lights
Stowe Nine Churches Parish Council
Please see below an update received from Highways England
Dear All,
An update on the functionality of the A5 Old Stratford roundabout traffic lights:
Highways England has upgraded the traffic lights at the A5 Old Stratford roundabout as part of the overall improvement scheme aimed at cutting congestion and reducing peak time queueing.
We recognise that there have been several issues with the new lights, including intermittent phasing problems and more recently a power cut. We have sought to remedy each issue as quickly as possible, though the technical issues have been severely disrupted and compounded by additional traffic at peak times, due to the nearby Towcester scheme diversions and ongoing smart motorway works.
When the traffic lights recently lost power, some approaches worked better but others were significantly worse with queues stretching back several miles. The purpose of signalising roundabouts is to control and balance the various approaches so that everyone gets a fair share.
The new traffic lights are currently running on a pre-programmed manual setting (which we have been regularly adjusting). Once the Towcester scheme ends in November, we will be able to better understand the normal flow of traffic and then turn on and calibrate the MOVA system (Microprocessor Optimised Vehicle Actuation) which is aimed at aiding the normal flow of traffic and will improve the reliability of the lights and journey times.
We do recognise the frustration around this complex issue and we are sorry for any inconvenience this may be causing. Please be assured that we are focussed on improving the traffic light operation as quickly as possible.
Please contact me direclty if you need any further information.
Kind Regards,
Paul
