Aeration of Bowls Green
SOMERTON & DISTRICT BOWLS CLUB
On September 13th slit-tining of the Bowls Green was conducted by a contractor using a Graden machine, depicted below. The whole exercise did not start well since unexpectedly a lorry arrived with 8 tonnes of sand in 25Kg bags late in the afternoon of the preceding Monday. Unfortunately the lorry did not come with a pallet loader sufficiently narrow to get through our side gate. This necessitated a small group of volunteers being rapidly assembled to manually transport the bags of sand onto the Club premises.
The actual procedure of slit-tining and sand filling proceeded well with favourable weather conditions ensuring the sand could free flow into the cut slits. It did however take most of the day since it was necessary for the team of volunteers to transport bags of sand around the edges of the green and fill buckets with sand since the Graden machine required constant feeding as it progressed across the green. The machine produced large amounts of detritus that had to be swept into heaps and transported away by wheelbarrow. Finally post-seeding and smoothing the surface using a drag net was conducted.
Those involved in the exercise were Ian Badman, Phil Catlin, Peter David, Dave Forsyth, Peter Jones, Peter King, Dave Pond, Toby Strang and Dave & Mary Sutton. Particular thanks to Mary who conjured up soup and rolls to fortify the volunteers.
