Anglo-Saxon doorway unblocked
After much planning, and with permission from Historic England and the church authorities, the unblocking of the Anglo-Saxon doorway in Averham church tower commenced in July. The work was undertaken by our usual stonemason, Richard Morley of Southwell with Peter Ryder, a historic building consultant from Northumberland, supervised the work. Unfortunately work had to be stopped when an unexpected feature, a sloping ‘shelf’, was uncovered. Work has been halted pending further research but is hoped to recommence in a few months.
