Uncertainty and Indecision creates potential Flood Riskand Threat to Heritage & Tradition in Wellow

Wellow Parish Council is concerned about intended changes by Newark & Sherwood District Council to a very old and successful agreement that could result in increased flooding of the ancient dykes around Wellow, potentially caused flooding to properties near the dykes and also loss of land called ‘The Parish Field’ bequeathed for use that was gifted for the benefit of the people of the Parish centuries ago.

NSDC registered the land in 2020 incorrectly with the ‘Land Registry’ without prior consultation or notification with Wellow Parish Council. Earlier this year (2025) a Cease & Desist order was issued to Jordan Castle Farm who was a long time tenant of the Parish Field.

The Rental income generated (less 10% to NSDC) has been effectively used for maintenance and clearance of the dykes to alleviate the risk of flooding.

Wellow Parish Council undertook responsibility for the work since 1996 upon the cessation of the service (by NSDC themselves).

Subsequently Wellow Parish Council seeks to advise the residents of Wellow and other interested parties as well as pursuing legal representation with immediate effect as it is understood that NSDC are planning on works (as yet unknown) as soon as the beginning of 2026.

For more information please see the contact the council directly.
