BBQ & Bonfire Concerns

During this warm dry summer period a number of concerns have been raised regarding BBQ’s and bonfires. Your neighbours are likely to have open windows, washing hanging outside, or have been working indoors during the day and are looking forward to sitting outside in the fresh evening air without invasive bonfire smoke.

Additionally, there are locally large areas of tinder dry vegetation which is at risk of catching fire from even the smallest spark or hot ember blowing in the breeze

Please be considerate and adopt the following recommendations:-

  1. Advise your neighbours before lighting your bonfire
  2. Do not try to burn damp material causing excessive smoke for long periods
  3. Never leave the BBQ or bonfire unattended
  4. Ensure it is completely extinguish (with water) before leaving it unattended
  5. Avoid overhanging vegetation, fences and areas of dry grass and combustible material
  6. Consider the strength and direction of the wind at risk of carrying embers and smoke towards a neighbour’s property, garden shed, open windows etc
  7. Have a few buckets of water close by in case the fire gets out of control
  8. Where possible light your bonfire at dusk for minimum impact on others
  9. Report any wildfires, and roadside verge fires immediately however small they may seem.
  10. Appreciate these fresh summer days without smoke where possible

Thank you for your thoughtfulness, safety and understanding towards others in your community
