Current Position for 2026 Season

Transgender participants can continue competing in the category they are currently playing under existing rules and arrangements. This approach provides clarity for the 2026 season while the BCGBA reviews its policy.

Policy Review Process

BCGBA will conduct a formal review of its transgender participation policy, considering legal developments (e.g., UK Supreme Court ruling on "sex" in the Equality Act), the concept of bowls as a gender-affected sport, and policies from other governing bodies. The review will assess the impact on competition, inclusion, and participation.

Establishment of a Working Group

A Transgender Participation Policy Review Working Group will be formed in April 2026. The group will evaluate evidence, consider implications for competitive and non-competitive play, and develop recommendations for the BCGBA Board. Recommendations will be provided during the 2026 season, with the next update expected in July 2026.

Commitment

BCGBA is committed to fairness in competition, inclusivity in participation, and respect for all members of the bowls community. The organization aims to address the issue with care, clarity, and integrity.
