Today was a big day for Ashley Nethercliffe. Having on four occasions this season turned up as a reserve for the Bowls Hampshire Middleton Cup team, he arrived this afternoon at Atherley to find he would be making his Middleton Cup debut against Oxfordshire - the first player from Oakley to be so honoured since Colin Taylor in 1992. Manager Paul May made a shrewd move in changing the playing order so that Ashley began his first game playing with familiar faces and individuals likely to encourage him and he responded by putting in a steady performance which drew complimentary comments from the manager and his skip Leo May. Inevitably on such an occasion Ashley had occasional wayward bowls but he always adjusted and demonstrated to the spectators and selectors that he possesses the talent to cement a regular place in the team. He will be delighted to have played on a winning rink and to have played his part in ensuring the County's first Middleton Cup win over Oxfordshire for a number of years. Well done Ashley.
