West Meon Parish Council recently took part in a baseline biodiversity survey at the Recreation Ground with Steve Bolton from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, together with representatives from the Parish Council, West Meon School and Woodlands WEB.

The survey looked at pollinators, grassland plants and existing habitat areas across parts of the Recreation Ground. It provides a useful starting point for understanding the current biodiversity value of the site and where improvements could be made in future. Recommendations included allowing some grass areas to grow longer, creating more varied woodland edge planting, introducing additional wildlife-friendly tree and shrub species, and considering small habitat features such as log piles or a pond.

The findings will help inform future discussions about how the Recreation Ground can continue to support both community use and wildlife. If you would like to read the results of the survey you can find them on the Parish Council website, by going to Parish Council -> Biodiversity.

If you would like to volunteer then please email the Parish Clerk, at clerk@westmeon-pc.gov.uk.
