Georgian Sandwich and Its World: A Social and Cultural History offers a vivid and engaging portrait of the town during a period of transformation, when leisure, culture, and sociability flourished alongside its enduring civic traditions. Moving beyond a simple chronology, the book explores the character of the town through its assemblies, theatres, concerts, and sporting life, revealing how both local initiative and wider influences shaped its development.

Published by Sandwich History Society, Georgian Sandwich is richly illustrated and grounded in extensive research, it brings together material from local archives and publications to illuminate everyday life as well as the institutions that sustained it. From music and card-playing to cricket and cockfighting, the study captures the texture of Georgian society in Sandwich with clarity and insight.

Both accessible and authoritative, this volume provides a compelling account of a provincial town - an essential read for anyone interested in the social and cultural history of eighteenth-century England, and Sandwich in particular. The author Dr. T. L. (Tom) Richardson, who taught at the University of Kent and who has written several books on Sandwich in different periods, as well as a biography of deal resident Elizabeth Carter, an 18th century intellectual and friend to Samuel Johnson.
