Wellington Bowling Club has received a cheque for £1,000 as a result of being selected as Persimmon Homes’ South West Community Champion.

Persimmon Homes’ Community Champions initiative is a national programme where charities and groups can apply for funding up to £1,000 to match money they have already raised themselves. Persimmon Homes, the UK’s biggest house builder, is donating a total of £750,000 to fund local community initiatives and good causes.

Wellington Bowling Club applied for funding to help pay for new equipment. Interest in the sport is growing and numbers joining the club increasing. A spokesman for the club said, “Persimmon Homes’ donation of £1,000 helps to ensure that more people will have more access to bowls at our club.”

Nina Hester, sales director for Persimmon Homes South West, said: “We were impressed with all the hard work Wellington Bowling Club is doing at the heart of the community. We wanted to do all we could to help the club and it is a pleasure to select them it as our Community Champion.”

Persimmon Homes selected 58 winners from around the country for awards in November. Each of them will receive between £300 and £1,000.
