Somerton & District Bowls Club will be open to visitors from mid-day on Sunday, June 28th, coinciding with the Family Day, organised by the Town Council on the Sports Field at Gassons Lane that day.

Members of the public will have the opportunity to find out for themselves what lawn bowling is all about and the enjoyment that can be obtained by participating in the Sport. Club members will be in attendance to welcome visitors and describe the activities of the Club. Visitors, so inclined will have the opportunity to actively participate in some light hearted activity on the green.

A considerable number of improvements to the infrastructure of the Club have been made in recent years that are worthy of inspection and the intensive work on the green and surrounds carried out by a select group of Club members has to be seen to be fully appreciated.

Lawn bowls has suffered from the reputation that it is a sport played by formally attired, old people. The Bowls authorities have worked hard to change this image and demonstrate that it is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages in a relaxed and informal environment. Our Club membership is truly mixed with there being nearly the same number of men and ladies. We regard ourselves as highly progressive in evolving change so that newcomers to the Sport can enjoy an unconstrained enjoyable experience. Hopefully visitors to the Club that attend this open day will leave with a realistic image of the current status of the sport and the accommodating nature of the Club.
