Not many villages can trace its history from the doomsday book of 1086. As a result of the dedicated research of local historian Margaret Burns we are able to now publish a treasure trove of information unearthed by Margaret on the history of our small village of Burghwallis.

Over the coming months we will add extracts from this research. It all makes fascinating reading especially as you have only to look out of your window or take a walk through the village and picture its incredible history from the Romans through the Anglo Saxons and the various Lords of the Manor.

The first of the history sequence is Lords of the Manor of Burghwallis It also reveals how the roads leading to Burghwallis have been rerouted over the centuries.

1594 the Manor of Burghwallis comprised of 60 messuages, 20 cottages and 2 watermills with lands in Burghwallis, Skellowe, Carcrofte, Sutton, Campsall, Auston als Ouston, Frickley, Elmesall, Upton, and Wrangebrooke, also the advowson of Burghwallis Church.
