Community Speed Watch update: by Cllr Matt Alexander

Earlier this year the Clive Community Speed Watch group of volunteers was set up. Trained and supported by the police, the sessions have been running since August resulting in several speeding drivers receiving letters from West Mercia Police. We have monitored speeds at one of four designated sites working in teams of three within the village at different times of day.

Initial findings

Some of the sessions have been uneventful, however on several occasions we have recorded motorists speeding in excess of the 30mph limit, with some over 40mph/hr. The highest speed recorded so far is 46mph at the Hebron Close site, which has proved to be by far the most common site for speeding. We have all been surprised by the deceptive sound that the buses make; we have regularly been convinced they are speeding, but when recorded buses were regularly found to be well within the speed limit.

Call for more volunteers

We would welcome more members to join the Community Speed Watch group - the more volunteers we have, the more flexibility we have in the sessions we can run. Commitment is not onerous, and we use a WhatsApp group of members to allow people to easily opt into a session they wish to commit to. The equipment is easy to use and we work in teams of three, so you can choose which task to do. We are also looking to identify more sites within the village to include the Wem Road and further East towards Quarry View.

What is involved if I volunteer?

  • a police check

  • a 1 hour training session delivered by our police CSW support officer

  • a commitment to volunteer when you have some spare time

Please email Cllr Matt Alexander if you are interested in becoming a CSW volunteer.
