It’s been a story of sensational fightbacks as our internal competitions enter their final stages, with not one, but two players staging stunning comebacks from the brink of defeat.
Fiona Burman and Graham Aldis both looked down and out when they trailed 12-20 in separate competitions, only to dig in and snatch victory.
In the Handicap, Kevin McGee was one shot away from reaching the semi-final, with a lead of eight over Fiona.
But she showed great resilience to win five ends in a row and celebrate a 21-20 victory – and the prospect of a semi-final against Rowland.
A few days later, Graham amazingly repeated Fiona’s feat, against Basil in the Sam Farmer Plate.
Serial trophy winner Basil had pulled away from Graham to lead 20-12 after 18 ends. But Graham won six in a row to triumph by the same score as Fiona and book a place in the second round against Paul Palmer.
Catalogue of comebacks
Ironically, Basil, Graham, Paul and Fiona had already been involved in notable comebacks in earlier rounds.
Paul hauled back a seven-point deficit against Fiona in the John Martin Shield, having himself been on the wrong end of a turnaround against Basil in the Handicap. Graham had already geared up for his latest heroics after somehow clawing back a big deficit against Stephen Banks, also in the John Martin.
Anne and Stephen are through to the semi-finals of the Mixed Pairs – Stephen’s second pairs semi – after defeating Judy and Rowland. They will play the winner of the remaining quarter-final between Cheryl Preston and Mark Howell and Linda and Peter.
The other semi-final is between Annie and Kevin - who received a bye following the withdrawal of Jill Hatfield and David Leach - and Nicola and me, following our win over John Box and Wendy.
John has had mixed fortunes, losing to Basil in the Veterans but beating Mark Howell in the Sam Farmer.
Linda Huntley and Ken Starnes have also won through to the third round of the Veterans, while Dorothy beat new participant Sylvia Critchley to set up a second-round match against Anne Bosman.
