Nine weeks ago, 10 runners, of varying ages and fitness levels, began their running journey on the Couch to 5k programme. At the start, running bursts of 60 seconds were a challenge. Now, nine weeks later, they can all run for 30 minutes without stopping.

New runners often make the mistake of overdoing it when they start running – heading out at an unsustainable pace, deciding to go too far or for too long. Lungs and legs burning they vow never to run again!

In contrast, Couch to 5k gradually builds up a runner’s ability to run for 30 minutes or around 5km. It works on building up stamina, running muscles, cardiovascular fitness and, most importantly when it comes to running, a strong mind. Each week the runners build on their running achievement from the week before. Knowing that you can run for 8 minutes, because you did it last week, helps you run for that length of time plus a bit the following week.

Esther, one of the running ‘coaches’, believes that Couch to 5k is achievable for most people and has seen many runners, over the years, complete the programme successfully. Battle Town Football Club is beginning a FREE Couch to 5k course in November. “If you aren’t very active and you want to get fitter, I recommend going along and giving it a go - I was one of the ten runners and I feel quite proud that I completed the programme. Believe it or not, it became easier over the nine weeks! The coaches were marvellous and extremely supportive.”
