CPRE Shropshire “Hedgerow Heroes” practical workshops this Autumn

Beginners Hedge laying workshops

CPRE is running further 2-day hedge laying workshops this autumn with Richard Clarke from Really Rural. Aimed at beginners or those wishing to refresh old skills, these workshops are a great opportunity for a hands-on, practical introduction to the traditional art of hedge laying, taught with hand tools (no chainsaws!). You will learn about the history and benefits of hedge laying, discover hedge laying techniques and tools (including maintenance of hand tools), and get hands-on hedge laying practice (Midland/Border cross style - clear out deadwood, select and laying pleachers, trimming, staking and binding) on a real hedge on-farm near the Stiperstones. Coppice Management workshops

We will run a further two 2-day coppice management workshops at Westhope near Craven Arms with Richard Thomason (Wild about Westhope). They are aimed at people who wish to restore old, overstood coppice or plant a new one and are These are practical workshops with plenty of opportunities for questions. Coppiced woodland can be hugely biodiverse with the changing light levels as the coups are cut in rotation. They also provide the products needed for hedge laying (heatherings/binders and stakes). Attendees between the ages of 16 and 24 who are interested in pursuing a career in the sector may apply to attend free of charge (in which instance, please email Sarah on admin@cpreshropshire.org.uk).
