District Council urge residents to have their say on kerbside glass recycling plans

Residents can now have their say on a proposed kerbside glass recycling service, as Newark and Sherwood District Council urge all those living in the district to take part in a public consultation. The responses to this survey will be used to inform its decision on whether a kerbside glass collection service is introduced.

The online survey is available at https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/kerbsideglass and the link contains lots of useful information before residents share their opinions. Building on comments received by residents on the latest district wide resident survey, the Council has been exploring the possibility of providing a kerbside glass collection service across Newark and Sherwood.

Results indicated that residents rated waste and recycling as the most important service delivered by the District Council, with more than 100 additional comments made in relation to the service and a significant number of those relating to a kerbside glass collection service. The launch of its public consultation comes after the District Council’s Cabinet agreed with the recommendations made by the Policy, Performance and Improvement Committee (PPIC) to consult with all residents on the specific details and costs of introducing a glass recycling service across Newark and Sherwood.

Councillor David Lloyd, Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, said:

“Creating a greener district is a top for priority for local residents and therefore a top priority for the Council. We’ve listened. And now we need peoples’ views to move forward. This public consultation is a vital step to ensure this proposed new service meets our residents’ needs, and furthers our work creating a cleaner, safer, and greener Newark and Sherwood. “Peoples’ responses will help us decide whether this service is something that’s wanted and, if it is, how we can best introduce it. The survey only takes three minutes to complete and could make all the difference to how we approach these plans. I encourage everyone to have their say.”

The proposed kerbside recycling scheme would provide those residents who wish to receive the service with an additional, but smaller (two thirds of the size of a normal bin) wheelie bin with collections every eight weeks.

A ‘Greening Newark and Sherwood’ leaflet is being distributed to residents during February, outlining the proposed plans for the kerbside glass recycling service, and also explaining what the District Council is currently doing to create a greener future – from improving recycling rates to planting trees and many other initiatives.
